Seven Famous People Who Mocked God and What Happened to Them
Humanity, driven by curiosity, has been able to solve many of its problems. With the advancement of intellect, science, logic, and reasoning, we have transformed our world. Today, we can fly across continents for hours nonstop using airplanes, and we can communicate with people thousands of miles away in seconds using mobile phones.
In the medical field, even conjoined twins can be separated through surgery, and many diseases can be diagnosed and treated. As a result, some individuals have begun to see humans as equal to God, making derogatory statements against Him and even putting Him to the test.
In this article, we will look at seven famous people who mocked God—and what happened to them.
1. Cazuza
Cazuza was a Brazilian bisexual composer, singer, and poet. During a show in Canecão, Rio de Janeiro, while smoking a cigarette, he blew some smoke into the air and said, "God, that’s for you." He later died at the age of 32 from lung cancer in a horrible manner.
2. John Lennon
John Lennon, an English singer and songwriter, made a controversial statement in 1966:
"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that. I’m right, and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now."
Fourteen years later, on December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot dead by Mark David Chapman in New York City at the age of 40.
3. Tancredo Neves
Tancredo Neves was the president-elect of Brazil in 1985. During his presidential campaign, he boldly declared that if he received 500,000 votes from his party, not even God could remove him from the presidency.
He won the election and secured the votes, but just days before his inauguration, he fell ill and died.
4. Christine Hewitt
Christine Hewitt, a Jamaican journalist and entertainer, once claimed that the Bible was "the worst book ever written."
In June 2006, she was found burned beyond recognition in her vehicle.
5. Thomas Andrews
Thomas Andrews was the naval architect responsible for designing the Titanic. When asked by a reporter how safe the ship was, he reportedly replied:
"Not even God can sink it."
On April 14, 1912, while en route to the United States, the Titanic struck a massive iceberg and sank in less than three hours. Out of more than 2,200 passengers and crew aboard, only 705 survived. The rest, including Thomas Andrews, drowned in the ocean.
6. Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe, an American actress and model, was visited by evangelist Billy Graham during a show presentation. He told her that the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her.
After hearing what the preacher had to say, she responded, "I don’t need your Jesus."
A week later, she was found dead in her apartment.
7. Bon Scott
Bon Scott, an Australian singer and songwriter, famously sang in one of his 1979 songs:
"Don’t stop me; I’m going down all the way, down the highway to hell."
On February 19, 1980, he was found dead in London at the age of 33.
Galatians 6:7 says:
"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows, that he will also reap."
No matter how much progress humanity makes, we can never outgrow God. The individuals we have discussed serve as sobering reminders that mocking God comes with dire consequences. Let us be mindful of our words and actions.
